Many people would probably cringe when they ask “what do you do for a living?” and your response is “I write”. Why? Many have stereotyped thoughts on how a writer must look like: hunched, reading glasses perched on a long beak of a nose and anti-social behavior (some of these may even be characteristically true) but not the poor tag. Definitely not that! Below we take a look at some of the wealthiest writers in the world as of 2016.
James Patterson, ($95 million).
Popularly known for his crime novel series Alex Cross, he is the first person to sell 1 million e-books and has in total sold more than 300 million books. He topped the list on Forbe’s for the third consecutive year.
Jeff Kinney, ($19.5 million).
His book Diary of a Wimpy Kid launched him into the world of top writers as a children’s book writer and he completed and released the tenth book in the series in 2015 titled Old School.
JK Rowling, ($19 million)
Writer of the widely read Harry Potter series who though initially found it hard to put the book into the reading world has become one of the richest female writers ever and she published the first of the series in 1997.
John Grisham, ($18 million)
He was a lawyer before taking up writing and his books have been reproduced into popular movies including The Firm, he has sold more than 300 million copies worldwide.
Stephen King, ($15 million).
Another writer that had to battle rejections and have now become one of the most widely read authors with more books than anyone would care to count, many of his books are movies and he recently wrote a book on how to become a writer. He writes horrifying horror stories that make the toes curl and among the various titles is: It.
Danielle Steel, ($15 million).
Widely known for her works of fictional romance, Danielle Steel has sold as many as 650 million copies across the world (and there are unconfirmed rumors that aliens once requested for some of her works too).
Nora Roberts, ($15 million).
Another romance novel veteran, Nora Roberts is a name that many have come to associate with deep romantic stories, she has written more than 215 novels till date and keeps writing.
E.L. James, ($14 million).
She started out writing her romantic series Fifty Shades of Grey as a fan fiction tribute to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight before it became a sensation that spread through literary circles like a wild fire with its erotic contents and deep insights into the human mind.

Veronica Roth, ($10 million).
After she gave us Divergent, it was difficult not to be after her until she also gave out Insurgent and then Allegiant which have all been adapted into film.
Paula Hawkins, ($10 million).
Popular for her book The Girl on the Train that was published in 2015, Hawkins steeped into the limelight as the book sales that have risen to more than 11 million raked in tons of money for her.
