Oscar 2018:Three more films vie for Best Foreign Language Film nominations

Three more countries have submitted their entries for 2018 Best Foreign Language Film category for next year’s Academy Awards.

 

Taiwan (“Small talk”), Cambodia (“First they killed my father”) and Russia (“Loveless”) are three more countries who submitted their entries for the 90th Academy Awards that will held March 4, 2018.

 

Taiwan selected Hui-Chen Huang’s documentary “Small Talk” as its official entry for the foreign-language category at the 90th Academy Awards. The documentary is a personal exploration of Huang’s relationship with her lesbian mother A-nu. The film delves into A-nu’s past as a Taoist priestess, as well as detail her romantic relationships, friendships and her role as a mother that was often absent. The documentary has already bagged an award for best doc at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year.

Cambodia entered Angelina Jolie’s “First they killed my father“, a movie adaptation of a memoir of the same name by Loung Ung. The book was an autobiographical account of Ung of her family’s experience during the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia. According to the Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee, “First They Killed My Father explores a tragic period of history through the eyes of a child. Dialogue is at a minimum and it works well with the story told through intense cinematic images. Committee members, as well as the Khmer community, found the film to be cathartic, as it brought back memories often best forgotten.”

 

For Jolie, the selection “Means a great deal to all of us involved in making the film. To work with local artists to bring this story forward has been a moving and humbling experience.” While Ung added that “We were together when we received the news and it was very emotional. This has been a long journey for me, and while it is personal, it is also reflective of the experience of millions of Cambodians. We are very proud to be representing Cambodia as this year’s selection and share this moment with the country.”

Director Andrey Zvyaginstev’s new film “Loveless” was selected by the Russian Oscars committee for the country’s bid for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film nomination. The film focuses on a couple in the midst of a divorce who must come together to search for their son who has suddenly gone missing. Loveless was premiered at the 70th Cannes Film Festival where it also won the jury prize. Zvyagintsev’s two previous films, Elena and Leviathan, also won accolades at Cannes, with Leviathan winning the Best Foreign Language Film Award at the 2015 Golden Globes and being nominated for the Academy Award in 2015. The director has also previously been invited to sit on the Oscars’ jury.
