Trump Sanctions Jones Act Waiver on Puerto Rico to Help Hurricane Relief Efforts.

The President of the United States Donald Trump has authorized the lifting of the Jones Act that regulated shipping activities in the Puerto Rican Island waters to help speed up and ease efforts to salvage what is left from the relentless hurricane.

Elaine Duke who is acting Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary said that the waiver will be in effect for 10 days and enough equipment will be shipped into the area to allow repairs from the devastation left in the wake of the storm.

The DHS Spokesman David Lepan also stated in an interview with CNN that the waiver can be extended if after the 10-day grace there are still some shipping activities needed to be done. He acknowledged that the waiver was approved because it is considered in the best interest of national security.
