10 infected, 49 under surveillance as Monkey pox hits Bayelsa


A suspected outbreak of Monkeypox has been reported in Bayelsa State

 

Ten people have already been infected, while authorities are said to be tracking the whereabouts of forty-nine others who may have in contact with those infected. The infected persons have been placed in an isolation centre created at  Niger Delta University Hospital, NDUTH, Okolobiri, in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and the epidemiological team of the state’s Ministry of Health are said to have spearheaded the creation of the centre. Furthermore, samples of the virus had been sent to the World Health Organisation (WHO) laboratory in Dakar, Senegal, for confirmation.

 

Monkeypox is a type of viral infection that was first observed in monkeys, hence the name. It is, however, found in bush animals such as rats, squirrels and antelopes. Symptoms include a severe headache, fever, back pains among others. However, the infection is also marked by outbreaks of rashes that are much larger than that caused by chickenpox. The rashes can be frightening and frightening and usually spread to the whole body of infected persons.
