What is better than studying History and making history as well? Well, Ozibo Ekele has done just that, as he becomes the first ever First Class History graduate in UI since the inception of the department.
On Monday when the convocation ceremony of graduates of the 2015/2016 academic year began, Ekele was the highlight of the ceremony although he is only one among the 186 students who made first class degree, according to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka.
The ceremony also featured 1,538 students who graduated with Second Class Upper degrees and 3,133 who finished with a Second Class Lower degree. The total number of graduates for the year was 5,629.
He admonished the graduates to keep making the school proud as they went into the world and he added:
“I am aware that there has been strident public criticism of the large number of first class graduates from our universities. We are exceedingly proud of all Ibadan graduates. We see this phenomenon from the strategic point of view of input-process-output. The University of Ibadan has the most competitive mechanism for undergraduate admissions in the country. This has been attested to consistently by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, in which Ibadan is the only university in the country ranked among the topmost 1,000 universities in the world.’’
He also gave Ekele special mention, hailing him for breaking the 69 year old jinx.
