The film reportedly did not make up to 50m yuan ($7m) on its weekend debut after a 750m yuan ($112m) budget.
Asura’s plot is based on Chinese mythology and featured leading actors and flashy special effects.
Producers are reportedly planning to rework the movie and release it again at a later date. Unless the film gets better turnout in the second release, Asura’s $105m loss would make it one of the biggest flops in movie history.
Before its release, the film was praised by the media, it was called the “most hotly anticipated blockbuster of China’s competitive summer season.” During the three days it was showing in cinemas, it received an abysmal rating on Chinese film review site, Douban.
Apparently, the plan for Asura was to kick off as a major fantasy franchise akin to Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones.
Lmao!! China ooo. this movie thing is not for you people. Money don waste. Kikikiki
I am not one to comment on posts on the internet, but as humans we should learn to encourage ourselves. Do you know how disappointed the producers already feel?
Saint Jesus sharrap there! What is bad is bad. They produced a bad movie, we are talking about it. what is the big deal? If you are not one to comment, why are you now commenting?
On top all their population, they cannot still produce a movie and get their citizens to see it. Countries with half of their population have better turn out. I feel for the producers tho. Money wasted.
Did I just see like Game of Thrones. Jokers!
Really it is not easy to produce a movie. What have you ever produced successfully in you life that calling people jokers? you are the biggest joker of all
