Many Nigerians are familiar with being broke before payday which makes them compromise on their meal. As lacking as some of these foods seem, they have saved the lives of so many people in the country.
Below are some super-budget friendly food we have all tried:
1. Garri and sugar
The most common and cheapest of all. Garri, otherwise known as cassava flakes is processed from cassava tubers and is considered to be a life-saving food. Just add water into the garri and sugar mix and if you are buoyant enough add groundnut and milk.
2. Concoction rice
This type of rice is often made with very few ingredients – mostly rice, vegetable oil, salt, seasoning cubes, curry and thyme. There is no particular recipe because it is cooked with the cook’s discretion.
3. Beans porridge
This type of beans is usually very watery and cooked with just palm oil and salt. It is eaten with garri or bread
4. Bread and coke
This meal can fill even the most gluttonous individual. It’s often referred to has a ‘bricklayer’s’ best meal.
5. Wanke/ Waakye
This Ghanian food is a mix of Jollof rice and beans. It is usually sold on the streets. It’s cheap and quite filling.
