According to reports from CNN, the 55-year-old businesswoman whose body was found by her housekeeper, allegedly hung herself in her apartment leaving behind a suicide note.
Kate, a designer was and once a senior fashion editor at the fashion magazine, Mademoiselle. She started Kate Spade New York in 1993 with her husband, Andy Spade. She opened her first shop three years later in the city and has since then gone on to be a household name.
Kate Spade New York issued an official statement on their Twitter confirming the death of their founder. The Spade family released a statement asking for privacy as they came to terms with her death.
“We are all devastated by today’s tragedy. We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly. We would ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve during this very difficult time,” the statement read.
Spade’s sister, Eve Brosnahan, also spoke with the Daily News on Tuesday. “It’s very difficult,” Brosnahan said while crying — and politely declining to give a full interview. “I can’t right now. I just can’t.”
She is survived by her husband and her 13-year-old daughter.
