UEFA Nations League Roundup: Ferran Torres scores a hat-trick as Spain destroys Germany 6-0; Other results

Ferran Torres became the first player to score a competitive hat-trick against Germany since Michael Owen in 2001, as the Manchester City man netted his first-ever career hat-trick in Spain’s 6-0 drubbing of Germany.

Juventus striker Alvaro Morata scored Spain’s first from a header before Torres sent a volleyed effort to the back of Manuel Neuer’s net to double the former world champions’ advantage.

Rodri then guided in a header to make it three, before Torres scored the game’s fourth and fifth goals to complete his hat-trick before a tap in from Mikel Oyarzabal made it 6-0 to inflict Die Mannschaft’s worst defeat ever.

This year’s Nations League will birth a new champion as Portugal, despite beating Croatia 3-2 Spain is out. France will be joined in the four-team finale by either Denmark or Belgium from Group A2 and Poland, Italy, or the Netherlands from Group A1.

Elsewhere, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud took a step closer to Thierry Henry’s goals record as Les Bleus endured a late push to relegate Andriy Shevchenko’s Sweden.

Giroud is now only seven goals behind Henry’s goal-scoring exploits with the national team after a goal in both halves against Sweden took his tally to 44 goals.

The loss means Croatia, despite a 3-2 loss at home to reigning champions, Portugal, avoid relegation, while the Swedes will now have to find their way back to the echelons of Europe’s new format after the loss against France sealed their relegation to League B.

Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo already had their hopes of defending the title dashed after losing to France on Saturday.
