Texas shooter, Devin Kelly killed himself after vehicle chase, sheriff says

The man who killed at least 26 people in a Baptist church in a rural Texas town on Sunday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Devin Patrick Kelley, 26. opened gunfire at worshippers of the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, just before midday on Sunday. Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt told CBS News in an interview on Monday morning that gunfire was exchanged between the gunman and two armed citizens during a vehicle chase after the shootings.

There was some gunfire exchanged, I believe, on the roadway also, and then (the shooter’s vehicle) wrecked out,” said Tackitt. “At this time we believe that he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he wrecked out.”

The man officials have identified to The Associated Press as the gunman in a mass shooting at a Texas church was discharged from the Air Force for allegedly assaulting his spouse and child, according to an Air Force spokeswoman.

Officials on Sunday had revealed that Kelly was discharged disgracefully discharged from the Airforce after a court marshall for allegedly assaulting wife and child. He was court-martialled, received a bad conduct discharge and a reduction in rank.

His inlaws worshipped at the church he attacked.
