1. Jesse pipeline exploded in Nigeria

On this day in 1998, the oil pipeline, which was owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, was situated just outside the city of Lagos exploded and killed over 1,082 people in the resulting fire that raged for 6 days before it could be put out.

2. Saudi Arabia had its first female director

On this day in 2012, Haifa al Mansour became Saudi Arabia’s first female film director after making a film about a Saudi girl who wants a bicycle. Haifa al Mansour has faced much pressure to quit and criticism of her career choice in the country that only shows a few films publicly and has tight restrictions on women’s freedoms.
