1. Frenchman C Hopffer patents the fire extinguisher
On this day in 1722, the first automatic fire extinguisher was patented in England by a chemist, French C. Hopffer. It consisted of a cask of fire-extinguishing liquid which had a pewter chamber of gunpowder. This was connected with a system of fuses which were ignited, exploding the gunpowder and scattering the solution. Before this time, if a fire broke out, people would have to fetch water in a bucket to quench it.
2. John C Garand patents semi-automatic rifle
On this day in 1936, John C Garand patents the first semi-automatic rifle. After 17 years of working, Garand came up with a gas-operated weapon of .30-inch calibre that was 43 inches (109 cm) long yet weighed only 9.5 pounds (4.3 kg) and fed from an eight-round clip.
Adopted in 1936, the M1 became the first standard-issue autoloading infantry rifle in the world. Millions of the accurate, efficient, and durable weapons were produced in World War II.
3. Mother Teresa beatified
On this day in 2003, Mother Teresa is beatified by Pope John Paul II and is known by Catholics as ‘Blessed.’ After Mother Teresa passed away in 1997, the Vatican initiated the process of canonization ( An investigation of a sainthood and a miracle attached to her intercession) before Mother Teresa could be beatified.
The Congregation examined all available evidence to determine her merit for sainthood studying both published and unpublished material and also invited a famous atheist, Christopher Hitchens, to make a case against her canonization. The miracle from Monica Besra – an Indian woman was healed from a tumour in her abdomen while she was wearing a locket containing the image of Mother Teresa – sealed the deal that caused Mother Teresa to be beatified by Pope John Paul II.
So,you mean to say that she is addressed as Blessed Mother Teresa
