Today in history: US companies pull out of South Africa

Today is Monday, October 22, the 295th day of 2018. There are 70 days left in the year.

On this day in 1986, American companies withdrew from doing business in South Africa including sales and manufacturing due to the pressure on the South African government to dismantle its apartheid policies.

In just 1 week 3 major multinationals had announced their withdrawal including IBM, General Motors and Honeywell.

Around this period, more than 50 US companies pulled out of South Africa and their move was praised by anti-apartheid activists in the country.
