Check out President Obama bronze statue by Rapid City, South Dakota

The American Rapid City of South Dakota has unveiled a life-sized statue of former US President Barack Obama.

The bronze likeness of Obama is the latest addition to Rapid City’s City of Presidents project, according to the Smithsonian. The idea is to honour American presidents with life-size bronzes scattered throughout the downtown. Each statue is privately funded and placement follows a preset pattern to make sure there is no favouritism or political bias in the process.

The Obama statue depicts the former president waving one hand while holding hands with his younger daughter, who is also waving her other hand. The design was inspired by a photo of the former president with Sasha Obama at his first inauguration. The moment was inspired by their real walk onto the stage to deliver his victory address at Chicago’s Grant Park as the 2008 president-elect.

Painter and sculptor James Van Nuys, who created the Barack Obama statue, told the Journal he was happy the board chose the design with Barack Obama and Sasha Obama. Dallerie Davis, the co-founder of the project, said the group previously considered depicting Barack Obama waving by himself, before deciding on the final design. According to Davis, “we found out that a standing guy who is waving is rather boring and the one thing we don’t want to do is have a boring statue on the street, particularly someone like President Obama. He deserves a statue that isn’t boring.

And if you ever visited Rapid City in South Dakota, you would find the Obama statue on the corner of 4th and St. Joseph.
