Actress Taraji P. Henson opens up about her mental health, starts non-profit to help people

Hollywood actress Taraji P. Henson is getting real about her battle with mental health as she starts a non-profit to battle the stigma among African-Americans.

Over the weekend, the actress launched her new non-profit called The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, which is aimed at battling the stigma around mental health, particularly in the African American community. Taraji sold her personal items to raise funds for the foundation.

During the launch, Taraji revealed that she too has sought treatment and sees a psychiatrist.  “I’m here to tell you that when they tell cut and the cameras go away, I go home to real problems just like everybody else,” she said. Adding that she wanted to be open about her struggles so people see that its okay to go through certain things as humans.

Why Taraji made this step:  To Taraji the foundation is personal! The actress holds the cause close to her heart because her son, Marcell, struggled with mental health issues after his father was murdered in 2003, and her father, Boris Lawrence Henson, also battled mental health challenges after serving overseas.
