The 48-year-old Argentine’s condition was made public after his side came from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Liverpool in the Champions League last week.
Sevilla say Berizzo’s return to the La Liga side’s dugout will depend on his recovery after the operation.
Assistant manager Ernesto Marcucci will take charge in the meantime.
The Argentine was appointed Sevilla head coach in the summer on a two-year deal, following a three-year stint at Celta Vigo.
He once worked with Chile as assistant manager in 2007 and later coached O’Higgins where he wn the league title and the domestic cup later in 2014.
Our prayers are with him.
