Serena Williams has Meghan Markle’s back. The professional tennis player gushed over her longtime pal in the wake of criticism the latter received over her recent Wimbledon appearance, where she cheered the athlete on.
Some people at the All England Club were reported to have been offended the Duchess of Sussex had opted for a pair of jeans to watch Serena in her second round match against Kaja Juvan.
Williams, 37, told reporters at a Wimbledon 2019 conference on Thursday, 11 July that she was unaware of any current headlines slamming the former Suits actress, also 37, over her security requests and attire during the 4 July match.
“I didn’t know there was negative media out there,” says the 23 times Glam Slam winner. “Any time I see her name attached to anything, I don’t read it.”
Serena Williams also went on to say that her experience with the Duchess has been nothing but positive. “She couldn’t be a better friend to me. Low moments, high moments, she’s always there, and that’s all I want to be to her.”
Serena, who is chasing to equal Australian Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam wins holder had previously acknowledged her friend’s presence at her second-round match against Kaja Juvan. “I knew she was there and it’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support … tennis, so I was happy,” she had said at another post-play conference on July 6.
Serena will be playing her 11th Wimbledon Single’s final Saturday, 13th July 2019 against Romanian’s Simona Halep. If she wins, it would be her eighth Wimbledon Women’s single title as well as her first Grand Slam since giving birth to her daughter, Olympia, in 2017.
