Las Vegas prosecutors explain why Cristiano Ronaldo will not face rape charges

Cristiano Ronaldo won’t face criminal charges after a woman accused the Juventus star of raping her in his suite at a Las Vegas resort more than 10 years ago, a top prosecutor says on Monday.

Kathryn Mayorga, 34, alleged she was raped by the Portuguese international at his hotel suite after they had met at a night club in 2009.

Investigators say the claim cannot be proved beyond reasonable, reports the Associated.

Based upon a review of information at this time, the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming” Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson says in a statement.

The decision represented a victory on one of two legal tracks tied to the 2009 allegation against one of the most recognizable and highly paid players in sports.

In a lawsuit still pending in federal court, Mayorga alleges that she was pressured to sign an agreement to keep quiet in exchange for $375,000. Her lawyers want to void the deal and collect at least $200,000 more from Ronaldo.

Ronaldo’s attorneys have acknowledged that the soccer star and Mayorga had consensual sex in June 2009, but they denied it was rape.

Attorneys for Mayorga, a former model and schoolteacher, did not immediately respond to telephone, text and email messages from the Associated Press.

German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, first published a story about the allegation last year.

It said that in 2010, she reached an out-of-court settlement with Ronaldo involving a $375,000 (£288,000) payment for agreeing never to go public with the allegations.

Ms Mayorga’s lawyer said she had been inspired to re-open the case by the #MeToo movement.

At the time, Ronaldo was playing for Manchester United, and about to join Real Madrid, where he spent the next nine years per BBC Sport.

Ronaldo moved to Juventus last July. He has won the Ballon d’Or – awarded to the world’s best footballer – in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
