Director and writer named for late Aretha Franklin biopic, Respect

Stage director, Liesel Tommy, has been named to direct the biopic Respect out of honour for the late queen of soul music Aretha Franklin.

As announced by MGM on Thursday, Tommy will direct the film which will star Jennifer Hudson, a lead on-screen character to assume the role of Franklin.

Hudson was given a role as the late Queen of Soul in January 2018 after Franklin actually picked her for the job. At the time, Hudson played out a variety of Franklin’s tunes at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy slam.

Additionally Callie Khouri, who wrote 1991’s Thelma and Louise, will write the movie.

Tommy was nominated for a Tony Award for coordinating the 2016 Broadway creation of Overshadowed featuring Lupita Nyong’o. She will likewise coordinate a film adaptation of Trevor Noah’s collection of memoirs.

Aretha Franklin died at 76 years old in August 2018 from pancreatic cancer.
