Little Mix star reveals why she tried to kill herself in new documentary – Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out

In a new documentary titled, Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, that will air on BBC One on Thursday, Little Mix star Jesy Nelson has revealed how online trolling targeting her looks and weight led to her attempt to kill herself, the BBC reports.

According to the BBC, the cyberbullying started after Little Mix won the 2011 Britain’s X-Factor. Jesy says the comments made about her appearance upset her so much that she “just wanted to die.

In sharing her story, Jesy says hopes “it helps other people who might be going through what I did.”

It all began during her appearance at that year’s X-Factor, which Little Mix won. What would have been a celebration period for the young singer was hijacked by trolls who vented their own insecurities and unkindness on her.

I had about 101 Facebook messages in my inbox, and the first one that came up was from some random man, saying: ‘You are the ugliest thing I’ve seen in my life, you do not deserve to be in this girl band. You deserve to die’, ” Jesy recalls. This happened just a few hours after winning the show.

It became the worst time of my life,” she says. “I wasn’t just known as one of the singers in Little Mix, I was known as ‘the fat, ugly one’.”

Then in 2013, the group returned to X-Factor as guest stars where they performed their group single. Jesy says her focus was not on the music but on her appearance. She actually starved herself for a week in a bid to accepted. However, the trolling continues. The impact of those negative comments took a toll on her mental health to the point she “got severely depressed.

According to Jesy, she couldn’t take the pain anymore so she tried to end through overdosing on medications.

The only way I can describe the pain is like constantly being heartbroken. I remember going to the kitchen and I just took as many tablets as I could. Then my ex, who was with me at the time, he woke up and was like, ‘why are you crying?’ I kept saying, ‘I just want to die’.”

Jesy was taken to hospital and thankfully, was not left with any complications following her attempt to take her own life.

Sharing the news of the documentary’s impending release with fans on Instagram, Jesy Nelson writes:

So this is it, guys! Here is the official trailer for my documentary #oddoneout which is airing this Thursday at 9 pm on BBC 1, and on BBC Three iPlayer. I’ve gone on such a journey since filming started and met some of the most inspirational people. I can’t wait to finally share it with the world and hope that it helps other people who might be going through what I did.”
