Johnny Depp addresses depression, financial problems, in new Rolling Stone interview

Johnny Depp gave a rare and extremely candid interview with Rolling Stone where he attempted to set reports about spiralling money problems straight.

So are you here to hear the truth?” Depp asks when reporter Stephen Rodrick sat down with the actor. “It’s full of betrayal,” he adds.

In the course of the interview, the actor talked about his depression as his life spiralled downward following his financial issues and divorce from Amber Heard. he also shared his true thoughts on Harvey Weinstein and a rumour about his wearing an earpiece because he couldn’t remember his lines.

On Depression

I was as low as I believe I could have gotten,” Depp tells the magazine. “The next step was, ‘You’re going to arrive somewhere with your eyes open and you’re going to leave there with your eyes closed.’ I couldn’t take the pain every day.”

He said he then began writing a memoir. “I poured myself a vodka in the morning and started writing until the tears filled my eyes and I couldn’t see the page anymore,” he explains, wiping tears from his eyes. “I kept trying to figure out what I’d done to deserve this. I’d tried being kind to everyone, helping everyone, being truthful to everyone. The truth is most important to me. And all this still happened.

On money issues

Johnny disagrees with TMG’s claim against him, starting with the extreme amount of money the company said he spends monthly on wine. “It’s insulting to say that I spent $30,000 on wine. Because it was far more,” he tells Rolling Stone.

He also said he dropped more than the $3 million TMG said it cost to “shoot Hunter [S. Thompson] into the f–king sky,” referring to having the writer’s ashes shot out of a cannon after his death. “It was $5 million,” he said.

On Jack Sparrow and his work ethic

Depp claimed he’d often clash with Disney screenwriters over the character of Captain Jack Sparrow while working on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Why must you have these f–king heinous subplots?” he said. “It’s convoluted. There is not a f–king soul that wants to see Captain Jack Sparrow sad.”

He also addressed allegations from TMG that he wore earpieces on film sets so someone could feed him lines. He admitted wearing an earpiece, saying the sounds fed to him helped him act “with just his eyes.”

I’ve got bagpipes, a baby crying and bombs going off,” he says. “It creates a truth. Some of my biggest heroes were in silent film,” Depp tells me, lighting another cigarette. “It had to be behind the eyes. And my feeling is, that if there’s no truth behind the eyes, doesn’t matter what the f–king words are.”
