Jussie Smollett drags the city of Chicago to court over alleged homophobic attack

Empire actor, Jussie Smollett is dragging the city of Chicago to court over his dragged out alleged homophobic attack.

Late last year, the actor was accused of staging a homophobic attack, something he denied until the case was dismissed in March this year.

At the time, Smollett’s lawyer said his record “had been wiped clean” saying he was “a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator.”

However, the city of Chicago remained resolute in the belief and revealed plans to sue the actor in order to recollect the $130,000 spent on the investigation for his case.

The police and the mayor stood by their statements and accused the courts of letting the actor go scot-free after it came out that he had paid $10,000 in bail and had done community service.

The man who decided to drop the charges against Smollett in March, Illinois prosecutor Joe Magats, said even he thought Smollett was guilty.

The papers filed by his lawyers claim he has been caused “humiliation and extreme distress”.

He’s accused the city, police and others of causing “substantial economic damages as well as reputational harm, humiliation, mental anguish and extreme emotional distress,” and says he’s seeking compensation.

A spokesman for Chicago’s law department has, however, told Reuters News that the city is standing by its claims and “we fully expect to be successful in defeating these counterclaims.”
