His mother, Dolors Sala Carrio, was hospitalized in Barcelona after showing symptoms of the virus. On Monday, however, Manchester City made a formal announcement on their official social media page that she has died.
“The Manchester City family are devastated to report the death today of Pep’s mother Dolors Sala Carrió in Manresa, Barcelona after contracting Corona Virus,” the club wrote on social media.
“She was 82-years-old . Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends.
“Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has spoken in reaction to the tragic passing of Pep’s mother, saying, “Our prayers and heartfelt sympathies are with Pep and his family at this overwhelmingly sad time. He and they have the love and support of the entire City family.”

At the time of this writing, 13,341 people have died in Spain so far from the Coronavirus. Barcelona is in Catalonia, which is one of the areas in Spain with the highest number of cases.
Just last month, Guardiola donated one million dollars to the fight against Coronavirus. The money is expected to be used to purchase protective medical gear for health workers at the frontline of this outbreak.
49-year-old Guardiola has been in charge of managing the Manchester City team since July 2016 after spending time at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
La Liga side, Barcelona also shared a heartfelt message to Guardiola and his family. They wrote:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Dolors Sala during this difficult time, and we would like to express our most heartfelt condolences, especially to Pep Guardiola, his family and his friends.”
The Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease was first discovered in Wuhan, China in January, and since then, over 1.3 million cases have been confirmed in at least 184 countries.
Over 74 thousand people have died so far from the virus as scientists work constantly to try to find a cure for the virus.
