#Coronavirus: Lagos State suspends all gatherings of more than 50

The federal government of Nigeria has been taking precautions to ensure that its citizens remain safe in these trying times especially since new cases of  Coronavirus were confirmed.

The Governor of Lagos State, Governor Sanwo Olu has released a statement to this regard. The governor stated that gatherings of more than 50 should be suspended and the law enforcement agencies have been given a directive to ensure that the citizens comply.

Read the statement below:

It has been a trying period for Leaders and Citizens all over the world as the negative impact of the coronavirus has enormously taken its toll on households, global supply chains and the economy in general.

As we would recall, on February 27, 2020, Nigeria recorded its first case of the COVID-19 disease and the number of confirmed cases has ascended to 12, as at date.

It is not surprising that Lagos State being the most populous state in the country has been prominent in the recorded cases of COVID-19.

The Lagos State Government has however worked tirelessly in full preparation, weeks ahead of the first reported case in the country. As the Chief Incident Commander, it is my duty to provide regular updates on the disease and the steps we are undertaking to fight it, in collaboration with the Federal Government and other private partners.

There are 11 confirmed cases in Lagos State and 8 of them are currently under isolation/treatment at the biosecurity facility in Yaba. The index case has been confirmed negative and would be discharged soon.

You will all agree with me that these times call for us to act responsibly and avoid all forms of large outings and gatherings. The safety of citizens is our number one priority and their well-being is of utmost importance to the Lagos State Government.

To protect and save lives of citizens, all gatherings of more than 50 persons are hereby suspended, with immediate effect and all public/private schools should be closed effective Monday, 23rd March 2020. Law enforcement agencies, especially the police have been directed to enforce compliance with the directives above.

The support and cooperation of Lagosians is what we appeal for, while we make conscious efforts to defeat this scourge.
We would be announcing an economic stimulus plan after the State Executive Council meeting next week.

As responsible citizens, we all have a role to play by guiding against the spread of fake news, we should also disregard all forms of false, misleading and unverified information, especially on our phones.
These pieces of information are often designed to cause panic and end up doing more harm than good.
