Federal government charges civil servants to court for recruiting ‘ghosts’ into the service

The federal government has on Wednesdays arraigned nine senior civil servants before an Abuja court for allegedly inserting ghost workers into the federal government’s payroll.

The charges were brought before Justice U. P. Kekemeke of Federal High Court, Apo, Abuja by the the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) who named the following civil servants as suspects in the case: Usman Dayo, Osuntope Opeyemi, Johnson Adedokun, Ojeido Sylvanus, Oyebode Ayodeji, Florence Dada, Olaolu Dada, Blessing Ejeh and Aderibigbe Taiwo. They are the staff of federal agencies from Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources; Environment Ministry and the Federal Civil Service Commission, FCSC, amongst others.

The EFCC alleged that the suspects created and inserted various fictitious names into the payroll of the federal government for salaries and allowances without official consent, an action that had resulted in the loss of several millions of Naira. The Commission stated that the offence is in contravention of Section 289 of the Criminal Act.
