Federal Government declares June 12 a public holiday

The Federal Government has declared June 12 a public holiday to celebrate the 2020 democracy day.

The announcement was made by the minister of interior, Rauf Aregbesola on behalf of the Federal Government. He went further by asking Nigerians to continue to cherish the efforts that have been put into attaining democracy.

The permanent secretary in the ministry of interior, Georgina Ehuriah, released the statement in Abuja on behalf of the minister.

“Ogbeni Aregbesola called on all Nigerians to continue to cherish these selfless efforts and collaborate with the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to ensure the realization of the democratic ideals which these Patriots fought for, even at the cost of their lives.

“The Minister, who reassured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to battling the scourge of COVID-19 with the cooperation of all Nigerians, advised them further, to take responsibility for stopping the spread of the virus. He reiterated the need for all Nigerians to stay safe by observing physical and social distancing, personal and respiratory hygiene, as well as other regulations issued by relevant authorities,” the statement read.

June 12 is celebrated as Democracy Day in Nigeria and is the day that the military handed over power to an elected civilian government in 1999, marking the beginning of the longest continuous civilian rule since Nigeria’s independence from colonial rule in 1960.
