Baby Chayse was left in the care of Lindsey after his mother, Michelle Dearing, had gone on a shopping trip with friends to a 24-hour supermarket at 4 am on the morning of the baby’s death. The incident happened on 26 June 2016, according to the Metro.
According to Lindsey, he had mistaken Chayse for a spider after the baby fell asleep on his (Lindsey) chest. Lindsey claims he had he jumped and that was when baby Chayse rolled off his chest and hit his head against a heater, accidentally killing him.
However, the prosecutor says Lindsey’s version did not match medical reports, which suggested that Chayse’s death could not have been accidental.
A neighbour who testified via pre-recorded evidence told the court that on the night of Chayse’s death, he had heard people next door arguing, keeping him awake for hours. Then about 8 am, he heard Lindsey trying to wake the baby. “He kept saying ‘hey you’. He said it about 60 times.”
Chayse’s mother, Michelle Dearing, told the court that she and Lindsey, then 34, were planning to get married before the fateful night. She said Lindsey had proposed to her only nights earlier.
Another witness, Melissa Jones, told the court how she’d been at Kmart with Michelle when Lindsey called them, saying “Chayse wasn’t breathing“.
“I heard Michelle screaming my name and I knew something was wrong,” Melissa Jones says.
“She was a mess.”
Jones said she returned home with the baby’s mother and another woman to find “medics working on Chayse.”.
“Michelle collapsed in the doorway of my bedroom. She was in shock basically,” she adds..
The trial continues.
