OAU Bans Student Union Government.

In a statement by the OAU Public Relations Officer Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, the university has decided to place a ban on all Student Union activities until a semblance of sanity is achieved.

Following an enmergency meeeting held over the weekend, the University authorities on Monday,  decided to pass a law that outlaws the Student’s Union for the time being in a bid to check some violent activities ostensibly perpetuated by students on and off the campus.

The development was announced bby Mr Biodun Olarewaju who handles the public related affairs of the institution. His statement found on PUNCH online page reads in part:

“In order to forestall the total breakdown of law and order and curtail acts of brigandage among the students, the OAU authorities have suspended all activities of the university’s SU until further notice.

“Incessant fighting and unruly behaviour during their congresses and the recalcitrant attitude of their leadership have made it inevitable for the university management to suspend their activities.

“Apart from the fighting between the vice president of the union and the director of socials, in which broken bottles were freely used, the supporters of the president beat up the speaker on June 29 and 30, while the speaker’s supporters, in retaliation, beat up the president on September 15.

“The management also condemns, in strong terms, the forceful release of students under investigation from police custody on October 6, and the unwarranted vandalizing of people’s vehicles, particularly that of the Ekiti State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

“We also frown on the rumour of increment in fees and fabricated threat of invasion by cultists in order to deceive and falsely gain acceptance amongst the students populace to precipitate a crisis, capable of disrupting the academic activities of the university and recent serious fighting, open fracas, at the meeting of the union where the president of the SU was assaulted and which, if not properly and promptly addressed, could lead to bring consequences.”

Some students in unconfirmed reports were already prepared to flee back home until the seething violent wave passed.
