Sad! Yaba Tech recent graduate commits suicide

A newly graduate of YabaTech, Oluwamuyiwa Oluwagbemileke Sir-muel has committed suicide hours after sharing a depressing post on Facebook.

In the post, the late Oluwagbemileke alluded that things had gone wrong in his life that left him destabilised and depressed. He also said that he felt helpless and was entertaining thoughts of death. He wasn’t specific though on the underlying cause or what exactly he was going through. A later post yesterday solicited help for his mum, whom he said was the “the reason I have lived this far.”

Depression, we suspect might actually be more prevalent in our society than before. More young people seem also to be affected by it. Usually, it is a condition that is easily trivialised by our society and one hears such things as ‘get over it,’ as if depression were a cloth you can put on or remove at will. We read the other day about a young lady who wrote that no one cared when she posted on her WhatsApp status “help, depression has kicked in again.”  In that post, the lady reminded us the importance of keeping in touch with people we care about while they are alive and not when they are gone.

This present story has deeply affected us, and we’re questioning, what if? Too late, no doubt. We cannot do anything at this time to help the late Oluwamuyiwa Oluwagbemileke Sir-muel. But maybe we just might help the next person who might be entertaining thoughts of taking their own life. As Obama told his children, let us be “kind and thoughtful,” it could mean the difference between life and death.

Read the notes

“When a man’s life is unstable, worried, downcast and destabilized, things he does right before will become wrong no matter the best he put in. He lost focus and strength, he becomes unhappy and angry at everything even if he tries to wear a smiling face. (The) thought of death will come on the scene. He keeps asking the question “why me”. He becomes helpless and even if he’s among people, he still feels lonely. Life can be truly unfair.

Advise: (Never let your ugly situations weigh you down). When you notice things are not going well, check yourself before it makes you feel worried. Sir_muel cares. Love you.”
