Senator thinks Boko Haram or Libyan soldiers, not Fulani herdsmen, may have been responsible for Benue masaccre

Senator Abu Ibrahim representing Katsina South Senatorial district doesn’t think that Fulani herdsmen were capable of murdering communities in Benue and Taraba states as reported in the media.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, speaking with newsmen on Thursday said Boko Haram insurgents or Libyan soldiers could be responsible for the attacks.

Side note: Ok, we’re keeping an open mind here, so let’s hear him out, after all, every decent person wants justice for the victims and for the perpetrators as well for that matter.

According to the senator, Fulani herdsmen are not able to handle sophisticated weapons used in executing attacks.

Sidenote: That argument might have some merits if the evidence is not overwhelmingly against the suggestion.

The senator, however, called for an investigation.

Side note: But we are worried whether they have not yet arrived an answer without working through the process of getting an answer. Is it possible to have an unbiased inquiry into the matter?

He says: “We have to seriously investigate this. A normal Fulani man is not known to carry AK47. The security agencies should probe whether the defeated Boko Haram insurgents were involved; whether the Gaddafi phenomenon has spilt over to Nigeria.

It should be considered whether displaced Libyan soldiers had a hand in what happened because it is not easy to acquire AK47.

On the suggestion that the presidency has been unresponsive to the killings, he says:

“It is not true because the president has taken steps to bring the situation under control. He has deployed soldiers to Benue State, he ordered the Inspector General of Police to relocate to Benue. He has taken other measures that may not be for public consumption.

“It is, therefore, wrong for anybody to say that the president is not interested in what happened in the state. When the president saw that the police effort was not bringing an effective result, he promptly deployed soldiers,” he adds.
