The UK says it’s building 112-bed prison wing in Nigeria; yeah to save money no doubt

The UK government and Nigeria have reportedly completed plans to build a 112-bed space for prisoners at the Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos.

A news report by Sky News states that the cost of building the facility comes just under £700,000.00. The move is motivated by the desire of the British government to transfer prisoners from Britain to Nigeria. About 320 Nigerians are serving various prison sentences in the in England and Wales at the end of 2016, the Sky News report says.

The two governments are reported to have reached an agreement on the issue back in 2014, which included the construction of the said prison wing. It must meet United Nations specification on prison construction.

Speaking on the proposal, a UK foreign spokesman tells “eligible prisoners serving criminal sentences in Nigeria and the UK can be returned to complete their sentences in their respective countries.”

The Government believes that wherever possible foreign nationals should serve their sentences in their own country.”

Helping Nigeria to improve its prison conditions and increase prison capacity will enable us to transfer more prisoners to Nigeria, which will, in turn, free up prison places in the UK.”

The UK might call building the prison wing “helping Nigeria” but it’s actually a savvy cost-saving saving move on their part.

The present writer thinks the federal government must insist on the UK paying for the cost of maintaining any prisoner transferred from the UK to Nigeria. Because come to think of it, they did not commit the crime in Nigeria, and there is no reason the Nigeria taxpayer should pay for their expense.

Moreover, it causes the UK a whopping £38,000.00 annually to maintain a single prisoner, it means that for an annual cost of fewer than 20 prisoners vis-a-vis the 320 harboured in their prisons, the UK would be making astounding savings. They need to give whoever came up with the idea an award.

No wonder the Jamaican government rejected the idea to build a £25m 1,500-bed prison in Jamaica when the UK government pitched the same idea. Also according to the Sky News report, the Jamaicans rejected the deal ostensibly because their ministers felt the deal was not to Jamaica’s advantage since it did not cover the prison’s full cost – think running cost.

Not being in possession of the full content of the purported 2014 deal, this writer sure hopes the Nigeria government has that clause included the agreement, namely that the UK government must cover the running cost of the proposed prison. Otherwise, we gonna be paying for something we did not buy.
