The All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) 2017 is instituted with the support of the African Union and seeks to recognise, award, promote and preserve Africa’s rich music culture to the global audience. Its missions include the celebration of Africa’s cultural heritage, the reward of upcoming and established musicians, and contribution to national and continental sustainable economic development.
AFRIMA event is divided broadly into two major categories, the regional and the continental categories and is presided over by a 13-person jury, which recently announced the nominations for the regional categories for the 4th edition of AFRIMA. It will hold from 9-12 November in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria, which coincidentally was also the host for this year’s African Movie Academy Awards held in July.
Meanwhile, the nominations for the continental award will be announced on Friday 11th August 2017, while public voting will commence on the 21st August 2017.

Central Africa
The best female artist nominations for this is region is dominated by Cameroonian artists (Montess, Reniss, Ewube, Daphne and Merveille) who will slug it with artists from Angola (Nsoki) and Gabon (Bussune).
In contrast, DRC, which has no female representation in the nomination has four in the nomination for the best male artist (Maitre Gims, Hiro, Fally pupa and Ke Black). Both Cameroon (Locko and Ou Meme) and Angola (Big Nelo and Anselmo Ralph) have two nominations each.
East Africa
Tanzania is leading the nominations for best female artist (Lady Jaydee, Venesa Mdee and Nandy), Kenya has two nominations (Chess Nthusi and Victoria Kimani), while Uganda (Julianna Kanyomozi) and Ethiopia (Wayna Wondersonn) have one nomination apiece.
Ethiopia (Sinishaw Legesse, Kibrom Birhane and Henok Mehari Brothers) and Kenya (Qritiqual, Octopizzo and mura K.E.) tied as the leader for the best male artist nominations for eastern African region with three nominations apiece. Tanzania (Diamond Platnumz and Alikiba) has two nominations.North Africa
Morocco (Ibitssam, Asmaa Lmnawar and Zina Dauodia) leads the nominations for the best female artist for the region with three mentions. Algeria (Zaho and Cheba Maria) has two nominations and Egypt (Sherine) one nomination.
L’algerino of Algeria has two songs nominated for the best male artist, and with Lacrim also nominated, the country tied with Morocco (Fnaire, French Montana and Saad Lmjarred) in the number of nominations for this category. Also nominated in the category are Tunisia (Balti) and Egypt (Tasmer Hosny) with one nomination apiece.
Southern Africa
South Africa leads the nominations for this region in the best female artist with five (Babes Wodumo, Busiwa, Lebo Sekgoela, Amanda Black and Thandiswa). Namibia (Sally Boss Madam) and Zimbabwe (Ru) each got a nomination apiece.
Just as in the female category, the best male category for this region is also dominated by South African artists (Hugh Masekela, AKA, Nasty C, Emtee and Ndoduzo). Malawi (Tay Grin) and Zimbabwe (Ndoduzo) have one nomination each.
West Africa
Aramide, Yemi Alade, Seyi Shay and Tiwa Savage are Nigerian female artist vying for the honour for the best female artist. Others nominated in the category include Mali‘s Oumou Sangare, Senegal‘s Viviane Chidid, Ghana‘s Becca and Benin‘s Zaynab.
Just as in the female category, Nigerian male artists lead the nomination for the best male artist for the region. Nominated are Runtown, Mr Eazi, Ycee, Davido, Wizkid and Teckno. Guinea (MHD), Ghana (Sarkodie) and Cote D’Ivoire (DJ Arafat) each has one nomination apiece.
