First Nigeria owned satellite TV set to rival DSTV to launch on October 1st

TSTV will pioneer the introduction of smart set-top boxes in Nigeria with Direct To Home (DTH) service from October 1st.

That’s  like “Happy Independence” Nigerians!

With DTH technology, a customer will receive broadcasting signals directly from the satellite on his set-top box (STB). A major advantage is that the viewer can opt to watch programs of his choice with a Pay-As-You-Consume model being offered by TSTV. Moreover, the integrated set-top box will allow subscribers to directly connect to internet, stream media, and access subscribed contents, without the need to purchase a separate smart TVs or dongles which can be expensive.

Furthermore, the DTH technology allows viewing in Standard Definition and High Definition. Additionally, there is the choice to browse content from Twitter, Facebook, Daily Motion, video-on-demand sites, Over the Top, OTT apps, news, weather etc. through applications residing on STB. TSTV also offers unlimited external recording, so subscribers can record their favourite programme on an external storage device by plugging in one’s  external storage device for recording their favourite programs. A hard drive of 1TB is said to be capable of recording up to 1900 hrs of contents of a standard definition programme. There is also in-built fast Wi-Fi, up to 802.11ac, 1 GBit/s Ethernet and USB 3.0 interface, built-in Bluetooth 4.0,  and RF for hybrid remote control.

For many Nigerians, the introduction of TSTV into the market is a welcome development, if Twitter feeds are is anything to go by. As a matter of fact, #TSTV is the number trending topic on Twitter Nigeria at the time of writing.

Notwithstanding,  scepticism has been expressed by some industry watchers, mostly due to the unreliability of internet connectivity. TSTV is also guaranteeing subscribers a complimentary 20GB internet data every month, which can be extended on demand.
