Manchester United sign Porto defender Diogo Dalot for £17.4m

Manchester United have successfully completed the signing of Diogo Dalot after meeting the £17.5m buy-out clause in his contract.

The 19-year-old Portuguese full-back is understandably excited to play for Manchester United under the supervision of countryman Jose Mourinho “the chosen one”.

While speaking with MUTV he says: “It was very important to make this choice and I hope to help him, because I know that he will help me to improve a lot. “I’m very excited for the dimension of this club and I hope to get great things here. “I know that this is one of the best clubs in the world and it is unbelievable to be here and I hope to achieve great things.”

The 19-year-old can play on either flank in the defence but prefers the role of right back. According to him: “Yeah, I prefer to play at right-back, but if I need to play in any position, I will play, no problem.”

Mourinho will be hoping that the promising youngster would be able to replace 33-year-old Antonio Valencia and earn himself a spot on the team.

In a club release Mourinho says:

“Diogo is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club.

He has all the attributes that a full-back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto Academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.

In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe and we all believe he has a bright future ahead of him at Manchester United.”

This new signing is crucial for Manchester United at a time where the futures of full backs such as Daley Blind, Luke Shaw and Matteo Darmian at the club are under speculation.
