Formula 1: Lewis Hamilton wins chaotic Tuscan GP amid crashes and red flags

Lewis Hamilton is even more closer to Michael Schumacher’s records after claiming his sixth victory in a chaotic Tuscan GP, which saw two big multi-car crashes and two red flags.

It was yet another action-packed and drama-filled race as the Formula 1 2020 served up another thriller at Mugello’s debut race.

A week ago at Monza, we had a similar race filled with numerous incidents as the AlphaTauri team took it in an unprecedented fashion, and yet the second Italian race of the season did not disappoint – but crucially this time Hamilton avoided another loss as he edged out Mercedes team-mate, Valtteri Bottas.

The victory sees Hamilton extend his lead at the top of the driver standings to 55 points.

Alex Albon also clinched his first podium finish of the season, holding off a challenge by Daniel Ricciardo, who was denied his best result as a Renault driver.

Max Verstappen and Italian GP winner, Pierre Gasly, crashed out on the first lap around the epic Mugello circuit as 12 drivers finished the race.

This prompted a second red flag in successive race weekends, with the second standing start of the afternoon giving Hamilton the chance to reclaim the first place he’d lost to Bottas on the opening lap.

Another red flag was raised when Lance Stroll’s high-speed shunt caused another unexpected mid-race stoppage as he ended up in the tyre barrier.

It was all a bit of a daze,” says an exhausted Hamilton, who was passed by Bottas on the first race start, but overtook and then hold off the Finn at the next two. “It was like three races in one day. It was incredibly tough.”

A downbeat Bottas adds: “It has to turn out well for me at some point.”

Sergio Perez, Lando Norris, Daniil Kvyat, and Kimi Raikkonen made up for their respective team-mate’s exits with solid points, while Ferrari was the only team other than Mercedes to score double points finish.

Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel, who was caught up in the first-lap drama, were under pressure from a charging George Russell in the closing stages, but the Williams youngster has to wait for his first F1 points.
