Manchester United remains in 5th after missing glorious opportunity to move into CL position

Manchester United failed to capitalise on  slip-ups of both Chelsea and Leicester as a 96th-minute strike from Southampton’s forward, Micheal Obafemi, bundled home from a cross to secure a point for the Saints.

After Chelsea and Leicester were handed big defeats at the weekend, Manchester United had the perfect opportunity to move into the Champions League places but went behind early on when Stuart Armstrong rifled home as the visitors took the lead.

But Marcus Rashford levelled things up eight minutes later before another superb effort from Anthony Martial put United in the lead. It was his 50th Premier League goal.

Southampton fought hard and were rewarded deep into second-half injury time when Michael Obafemi (90+6) bundled the ball home.

A victory against the Saints would have lifted United to third, but the draw keeps them in the fifth spot, level on points with Leicester City but short on goal difference. They have gone level on 59 points with Leicester in fourth, who they play on the final day of the season.

Manchester United’s boss, Ole Gunner Solskjaer, admitted after the match that United got what they deserved after Southampton draw.

He says: “It’s the worst time to concede a goal but that happens in football,”

You’ve just got to take it because we’ve won so many games that way ourselves. It’s all part of the learning for this team to be sat there, really disappointed after you think the three points are in the bag.

But probably we didn’t deserve three points today. They played well. They’re physical, very fit. We never got the rhythm in our passing, especially when we got to 2-1 but we created chances and played some fantastic football at times.”

Solskjaer was under pressure at the beginning of the campaign, but the January arrival of Bruno Fernandes has helped the former United striker turn things around.

Stats and facts from the match

  • Obafemi’s equaliser for Southampton was the latest Premier League goal Manchester United have conceded since Opta began collecting exact goal-time data (2006-07).
  • In this season’s Premier League, Manchester United have now lost one home match (against Crystal Palace) and drawn another (against Southampton) thanks to conceding in the 90th minute or later – in their 519 home games in the competition before this season, they’d only dropped two points as a result of conceding so late (one draw).
  • United are unbeaten in their past 18 games in all competitions (W13 D5), last having a longer run between April and November 2010 (29 games).
  • Southampton’s Armstrong has been involved in five goals in his last six Premier League games (two goals, three assists) – as many as he had been in his previous 40 appearances in the competition.
  • Anthony Martial (2 assists) and Marcus Rashford (4) have combined for six Premier League goals this season – no Manchester United duo have ever combined for more in a single campaign.
