Paris St-Germain land another treble after beating Lyon in French League Cup final

Paris St-Germain beat Lyon on penalties in the French League Cup final to seal a fourth domestic treble in six years.

It was the final French League Cup final, with the decision made last September to cancel the tournament after this season,.

The match ended 0-0 in normal time.

After the first 10 penalties were scored, PSG keeper Keylor Navas saved from Bertrand Traore before Pablo Sarabia scored the winning penalty for Paris Saint-Germain, who defeated Lyon in Friday’s French League Cup final to claim another domestic treble.

The game was watched by about 5,000 fans at the Stade de France.

It was only the second domestic game in France since Ligue 1 was abandoned in April – with PSG beating Saint-Etienne 1-0 last Friday in the French Cup final.

Thomas Tuchel’s team had the better of a tense final on a sweaty night before it ended in a penalty shootout. It would seem that they badly missed the injured Kylian Mbappe.

The masked France superstar watched from the stands as Lyon kept PSG at bay for two hours before having Brazilian defender Rafael sent off for chopping down Angel Di Maria on the edge of the box late in extra time.

Mbappe was injured in last week’s French Cup final, suffering a sprained ankle that looks likely to rule him out of the Champions League quarter-final against Atalanta in Lisbon on August 12.

PSG are desperate for tangible success in Europe but on this evidence, they still have some rust to shake off before being ready for that test.

We suffered but it’s beautiful to win at the end. We will celebrate this and then tomorrow we will start to think about another big match,” the excellent Marco Verratti tells France 2 television.

This is the Qatar-owned club’s fourth treble in the last six years, but the League Cup, an unloved competition, will be discontinued next season.

Lyon, however, is now facing the first season without European football since 1996-97, unless they win this season’s Champions League.

They visit Juventus next Friday in the last-16 second leg, holding a 1-0 first-leg win.

PSG, who have won 25 of France’s last 36 domestic trophies, play Atalanta in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, 12 August as they look for a quadruple.

The 2020-21 Ligue 1 season begins on 23 August, the same day as the Champions League final.
