31 year old Kevin Anderson had defied many odds to set up the meeting with two-time US Open Champion Rafael Nadal and many would have loved to see him clinch the trophy, but alas! Nadal!
The left-handed Spanish menace went into the game as the number one tennis player in the ATP rankings as against the South African number twenty and he started to win the game once the first ball touched the hard court.
He won the game without dropping a set and when Anderson was asked about the match he had said:
“He never goes away”.
Describing the relentless way Nadal had chased the game, not relying on his strong defending ability but instead taking the game to him.
Though they are both 31 years old, it was clear that Nadal was in a class of his own all through the match and he punished the South African.
He won his third US Open title and his sixteenth major trophy and he is just three titles off the mark of top spot that is held down by the legendary Roger Federer with nineteen trophies, and many looked forward to the meeting between this two but Federer was knocked out in the quarterfinals.
