The Best FIFA awards 2018: Luka Modric trumps to grab The Best FIFA Men’s Player

This Year’s edition of the ‘The Best FIFA Awards’ held in London may very well be remembered as one that put an end to the era of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Coincidentally, the two men were absent from the event causing the likes of Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric to make certain comments.

Ramos was of the opinion that it would have been good for Ronaldo and Messi to be present. “He (Modric) is a good player, colleague, and friend, but it would have been good for Cris and Leo to be here,” he says.

He continues: “I am as happy as if I had won it. (Modric) deserves it, he is an excellent player and has marked an important era in the history of Real Madrid.”

Modric, on the other hand, says he is not willing to go into a debate on whether the award was deserved or not, he believes that everyone has their personal reasons for not attending the prestigious event but confesses he’d have liked them to be there.

1. The Best FIFA Men’s Player award – Luka Modric

The award which was formerly known as Fifa World Player of the Year had been long dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as in the last 10 years, they both have had 5 awards each.

This year, it became apparent that things might be a bit different when Lionel Messi did not make the shortlist of top three in the World, and things indeed changed.

Following an outstanding season for Real Madrid and his amazing World Cup run as captain of Croatia, Luka Modric has been crowned The Best FIFA Men’s player to put an end to the domination of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

2. FIFA Puskas Award – Mohammed Salah

Mohammed Salah was awarded the FIFA Puskas award, which is basically the award for best goal of the season. Salah’s goal against Everton was nominated alongside the that of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo’s overhead kicks during the Champions League and garnered enough votes to win him the title.

 3. The Best FIFA Goalkeeper – Thibaut Courtois

The Belgian shot-stopper and now Real Madrid keeper has proven time and time again his value in between the posts. He had an impressive season for Chelsea keeping 15 Premier League clean sheets.

He also won the Golden Glove award at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia so it did not come as a huge surprise when he was named The Best FIFA goalkeeper over Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel.

 4. The Best FIFA Men’s Coach Award- Didier Deschamps

France Coach Didier Deschamps picked up the award for The Best FIFA coach after leading France to World Cup victory.

He also became only the third man to win the World Cup as a player and as a coach joining the likes of Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.

He did have some strong opposition in Zinedine Zidane and Zlatko Dalic, while the first coached Real Madrid to three consecutive Uefa Champions League titles, the other coached an almost written off Croatia into second place in the FIFA World Cup.

Deschamps has, however, triumphed over his peers and bagged the award, one he’d cherish for a very long while.
