Tottenham Hotspur breaks Arsenal’s heart in North London derby; Other Matchday 35 Sunday results

Tottenham boss, Jose Mourinho tasted victory in his first north London derby as Alderweireld’s late header gave Tottenham victory in a tightly-contested tie on Sunday.

Arsenal took the lead after 16 minutes as Alexandre Lacazett fired a long-range just right outside the edge of the area past Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris but Jose Mourinho’s side were level within three minutes when a defensive error from Kolasinac and Luiz enabled Son Heung-min to score with a deft chip.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rattled the post as Arsenal turned up opportunities to restore their lead before Alderweireld’s strike. However, Spurs found a way as Mourinho extended his unbeaten Premier League home record against the Gunners to 10 matches with another vintage tactical display.

The victory also ensures Spurs leapfrogs Arsenal into the eighth position on the table while Arsenal drops to ninth, two points adrift of their rivals with three games remaining.

It took Tottenham just 30 seconds to register an effort on goal, something they failed to do in 90 minutes against Bournemouth, as Lucas Moura’s drive forced a diving save from Emiliano Martinez.

The Arsenal goalkeeper was called into action on 11 minutes, launching himself high into the air to Harry Kane’s effort.

Arsenal’s captain, Pierre Emerick Aubameyang wasted a glorious opportunity to hand Arsenal the lead when he swiped at thin air while attempting to convert Hector Bellerin’s centre, but the anguish was momentary thanks to Lacazette, who rammed a thunderbolt past Hugo Lloris into the top corner as the Gunners struck first.

The lead was shortlived as Arsenal’s defence continued to be their undoing when Kolasinac misplaced a pass to David Luiz who could not recover fast enough to get the ball. Son Heung Min intercepted the pass to send a lovely chip over Emiliano Martinez into Arsenal’s goal post.

Tottenham’s equaliser came barely three minutes after Lacazette scored the opener at the Tottenham’s Stadium.

Aubameyang’s beautiful half volley forced a fingertip save from Hugo Lloris as Arsenal pushed for a late winner but it was Tottenham who would snatch the winner with nine minutes remaining as Alderweireld rose high to head Son’s corner home to maintain Mourinho’s imperious home record against the Gunners.

Other Matchday 35 Sunday results

Wolverhampton Wanderers 3 – 0 Everton

Wolverhampton Wanderers boosted their chances of claiming a place in next season’s Champions League with a comprehensive home victory over Everton.

Wolves bounced back from consecutive defeats to Arsenal and Sheffield United with a victory through goals on either side of half-time.

Raul Jimenez scored the first from the penalty spot in first-half injury time following a clumsy foul on Daniel Podence by Everton’s defender, Lucas Digne.

Leander Dendoncker headed in the second, just a minute after the restart before Jota lashed in from just inside the box to put the game beyond the visitors.

It moves Wolves back up to sixth in the table, three points behind Manchester United in fifth – a position that could be good enough to earn a place in Europe’s top club competition next season.

Aston Villa 2 – 0 Crystal Palace

Villa’s forward, Trezeguet, scored a brace to boost Aston Villa’s hopes for survival as they won for the first time since January, beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Villa Park.

Palace thought they had taken the lead through Mamadou Sakho early on, but VAR ruled out the strike for a handball before Trezeguet put Villa ahead in first-half stoppage time with a finish at the far post.

Villa were even impressive in the second half and their great efforts paved way for a second goal as the Egyptian scored yet again, poking under Vicente Guaita from eight yards. The home sides held on with Palace offering very little in the final third as they stumble towards the end of the season.

Crystal Palace’ striker and former Villa man, Cristian Benteke, got a red card after full-time for an off-the-ball incident with Ezri Konsa.
