Lloris-Son on field drama as Spurs edged out Everton; Matchday 34 review and predictions

Everton’s defender Micheal Keane would be disappointed as his team lost courtesy of his mistake to lift Tottenham Hotspur into the eight position on the log.

From point-blank range, Keane inadvertently turned Giovani Lo Celso’s shot past Jordan Pickford after 24 minutes of a game lacking quality and intensity despite both sides’ European qualification hopes.

The main centre of attention in the game happened during half time as Tottenham’s goalkeeper, Hugo Lloris, and forward, Heung Min Son, almost came to exchanging blows. The goalkeeper was unhappy with his team-mate’s work-rate in tracking a Richarlison run and shot moments earlier and had to be kept apart by Lo Celso as they headed down the tunnel.

Tottenham’s manager, Jose Mourinho, labelled the burst up between Son and Lloris as beautiful saying: “If you want to blame somebody for that, it’s me. I was critical of my boys because they are, not in my opinion, critical enough with themselves“.

It was a situation where an amazing kid, who everybody loves, Sonny, the captain thought he had to do more for the team and give a different effort. A couple of bad words, but I think it was something very important for the team to grow up, for that to happen you need to demand more of each other and be strong personalities. At half-time, I said when I saw the reaction I had no doubts they would stick together until the end.”

Stats and facts from the game

  • Tottenham boss José Mourinho has become the fifth manager to reach 200 Premier League victories, with only Sir Alex Ferguson (322) doing so in fewer games than the Portuguese (326).
  • Michael Keane’s own goal was the third that Everton has scored in the Premier League this season – no side has netted more. Meanwhile, it was the fourth own-goal that Tottenham has benefited from this term, also a joint league-high.
  • Tottenham are unbeaten in 15 Premier League games against Everton (W8 D7), their longest run without defeat against an opponent in the competition.
  • Everton committed 18 fouls in this game – only against Aston Villa in August (18) have they conceded as many in a league match this season.
  • Everton has lost half of their Premier League games in London (78 out of 156), with only Newcastle (79) losing more in the English capital.

Premier League Matchday 34 Tuesday fixtures, analysis and predictions

The Premier League continues today, Tuesday the 7th of July 2020, with three games, which would see Leicester, Chelsea and Arsenal among others feature.

Crystal Place vs Chelsea FC

Chelsea will continue their quest and hunt for a top for a place as they face London rivals Crystal Palace away at the Selhurst Park tonight. The blues would look to continue from where they left off on Saturday night against the Hornets as they travel to face Crystal Palace in an all-important encounter.

Team stats

Chelsea won’t have midfielder N’Golo Kante available for the short trip to south London. The midfielder suffered a hamstring injury in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Watford and is likely to be missing for a week.

Fikayo Tomori (muscle) had an unspecified setback and is still absent, as is Mateo Kovacic (Achilles).

Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson has no new injury concerns for Chelsea’s visit to Selhurst Park but still has Jeffrey Schlupp and James Tomkins out for the remainder of the season. Both players have been long-term absentees with hip and thigh issues respectively and are not expected to feature again this season.

Defender Martin Kelly returned to training on Monday after a calf problem but is unlikely to be part of the matchday squad.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1 – 2 Chelsea

Watford vs Norwich

Watford would look to bounce back from their 3-0 defeat during the weekend away at the Stamford Bridge and redeem themselves against relegation bound Norwich City.

Team stats

Watford has no fresh injury concerns ahead of Tuesday’s home clash with rock-bottom Norwich City. Nigel Pearson’s 17th-placed Hornets came through seemingly unscathed on Saturday when they were beaten 3-0 at Chelsea, their third successive defeat.

Daryl Janmaat, Gerard Deulofeu (both knee), and Isaac Success (Achilles) remain sidelined.

Norwich will be without midfielder Todd Cantwell due to a hamstring strain.

Boss Daniel Farke, who hopes Cantwell will be fit in time for Saturday’s home game against West Ham, will make late decisions on fellow midfielders Kenny McLean (ankle) and Alex Tettey (knee).

Prediction: Watford 3 – 0 Norwich City

Arsenal vs Leicester

Rejuvenated Arsenal side would look to continue its impressive win streak as they entertain Leicester City tonight at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are on a 4-match win streak, the latest, a 0 – 2 away win at the Molineux. Arsenal are unbeaten in 22 home league games against Leicester winning each of the last 12 in a row and would look to continue that fine form tonight.

Leicester won their first Premier League game since the restart against Crystal Palace, scoring more goals in that 3-0 victory than they had in their previous three league games combined.

Team stats

Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi will likely be absent tonight when Arsenal host Leicester. Mesut Ozil has yet to appear since the restart and Guendouzi was dropped by manager Mikel Arteta after the defeat at Brighton.

Pablo Mari (ankle), Bernd Leno, Gabriel Martinelli, and Calum Chambers (all knee) are long-term absentees for the Londoners.

James Maddison and Ben Chilwell are doubts for Leicester’s trip to the Emirates. The midfielder, Maddison, has a hip problem while England left-back Chilwell has a foot injury.

Chilwell was replaced by Wolves loanee Ryan Bennett in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace and he and Maddison will be assessed ahead of the game in London.

Prediction: Arsenal 2 – 1 Leicester
