World Cup Match Recap Day 5: Kane rescues the 3 Lions against Tunisia

Two headed goals from Harry Kane saved the 3 lions from drawing with Tunisia in their opening game in Russia.

It seemed that England was going to get an easy win yesterday when Harry Kane scored a header in the 11th minute of the match but Tunisia wasn’t having any of that.

Referee Wilmar Roldan pointed to the spot when Kyle Walker caught Fakhreddine Ben Youssef with his arm and Ferjani Sassi leveled via the controversial penalty.

Tunisia seemed to be escaping with a draw before the England captain found the back of the net after being left unmarked in the box again.

The much needed second goal was a confidence booster for Harry Kane who happened to be scoring for the first time in the world cup yesterday.

The win also gave England the all-important 3 points leaving them well poised to qualify from their group as earlier predicted.

Key Opta stats:

  • England scored more than once for the first time in 10 World Cup matches since a 2-2 draw against Sweden in 2006.
    – Harry Kane has scored in each of his last four games for England, his best ever run for the Three Lions.
    – England’s Kieran Trippier created six goalscoring opportunities, more than any other player has managed so far in the 2018 World Cup.
    – Kane became the first England player to score a brace in a World Cup match since Gary Lineker against Cameroon in 1990.
