Roseanne Show canceled by ABC after racist Tweet rant by star

ABC canceled its hit sitcom, Roseanne, on Tuesday after the show’s biggest star, Roseanne Barr, went on a racist Twitter rant.

Ms Roseanne Barr, the show’s star and co-creator, posted a racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, an African-American woman who was a senior adviser to Barack Obama throughout his presidency and considered one of his most influential aides.

Ms Barr wrote on Twitter: “If the Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby = VJ” Ms. Barr later apologized, but it was too late.

Roseanne Barr's tweet

Roseanne’s Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” ABC Entertainment president, Channing Dungey said in a statement.

Speaking on the cancellation, Disney CEO, Bob Iger, tweets: “there was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing”

The cancellation stunned Hollywood. Industry veterans said they’ve never seen anything quite like it. The revival of the show premiered to huge ratings just three months ago. Pre-production was already underway on the second season, which was scheduled for September 13.
