South Africa’s rapper Cassper Nyovest admits a wish to be Nigerian

South African rapper Cassper Nyovest has expressed his desire to be a Nigerian.

Cassper made the admission nowhere else but on Twitter, for the world to see.

“I wish I was from Nigeria, ” says the energetic rapper. “The love they have for their own artists, the way they celebrate their culture, 90% local content on radio and Tv, the way they celebrate their music no matter where they are in the world, the unity within their industry. A DREAM!”

This is so unusual, give me some background

A Nigerian fan had tweeted at the rapper, expressing a wish that Cassper were a Nigerian.

“I just wish you from Nigeria …..you are a good man and talented too ….always speaking the truth and being real… One love man,” writes the fan who goes by the name Onyii Smart (@onyiisprills).

What brought that about?

You know if you’ ve been paying close attention to music trends, you might have noticed that a lot is being said about Afrobeats. And Nigerian musicians are at the heart of Afrobeats. So much so that Beyonce got a bunch of them on her recent album, The Lion King: The Gift, in what she describes as a love letter to Africa.

So, a lot is going down and not everyone is happy. Of course, everyone has an opinion, rational or irrational, for or against, good or bad, and Twitter is the perfect platform to hear and get heard.

So Cassper, being in the music industry also has an opinion too. Finding himself in a Twitter argument for ostensibly supporting hip-hop used the Afrobeats example as an analogy for his advocacy for hip hop.

“Nigeria has all the genres we have but they push Afrobeats. What’s wrong with me riding for SA hip hop cause it got me here? I have supported every genre in SA, Come on big bro,” says he. “I hate these back and forths on Twitter. Rather call me if you wanna discuss this,” he adds

That tweet got the attention of Onyii Smart (@onyiisprills), who replied that he wished Cassper were a Nigerian. The rest is history as they say.

Unsurprisingly, Cassper’s response has attracted positive responses from Nigerians, many of who go on to express their love and appreciation for his music in the tweet thread, assuring him of their support for his art.
