The true story of Trino Marin, ex-husband of late American musician, Jenni Rivera

Born 15 February 1964, Jose Trinidad Marin is a famous American celebrity husband and former restaurant manager known as Trino Marin, the ex-husband of Jenni Rivera. Rivera was a renowned American singer, songwriter, actress, television producer, spokesperson, and philanthropist. Popularly known as Trino Marin, Jose was born and bred in Mexico before relocating to the United States with his family.

His fame came solely from being married to Jenni Rivera, despite their affairs being hardly ever made public. They got married in 1984 and have three children together. In a not so pleasant turn of events over the years, Trino got bad publicity based on the controversy that surrounded his treatment of his wife. It was alleged that he physically assaulted her and a case from 2007 seemed to ack this claim up.

Trino Marin is currently in prison for sexual assault and other crimes. He was sentenced to 31 years in prison without parole in 2007. Unfortunately, Rivera died in an air accident in the early hours of 9 December 2012, when the Learjet 25 she was travelling in with six other passengers crashed near Monterrey, Mexico.

In 1984, when Trino was 20 years old, he married her; she was allegedly 14 at the time. In 1985, when she was only 15 years old, she became pregnant with the first of their three children, Janney “Chiquis.”

Jenni ultimately decided to call it quits after years and years of mental torment. In the early 1990s, she filed for divorce, and it was finalised in 1992. Rivera was handed custody of her three children. 

Jenni initially filed for divorce from Jose because of the physical and mental abuse she suffered. She didn’t find out about his sexual abuse scandal relating to others until several years after the divorce. In 1997, she learnt that Trino had sexually abused their two daughters and her sister, Rosie.

Born 2 July 1969, Dolores Janney “Jenni” Rivera Saavedra was an American singer, songwriter, actress, television producer, spokesperson, philanthropist and entrepreneur. She was known for her work within the Regional Mexican music genre, specifically in the styles of Banda, Mariachi and Norteño. Rivera had such a successful and influential career that several media outlets, including CNN, Billboard, Fox News, and The New York Times, have labelled her the most important female figure and top-selling female artist in Regional Mexican music.

She released her first studio album, Si Quieres Verme Llorar, in the late 1990s but failed to attain commercial success. However, that didn’t deter her, and soon she rose to prominence in the United States and Mexico with her major-label debut, Parrandera, Rebelde y Atrevida. Rivera’s fame reached new heights after winning the Lo Nuestro Award for Regional Mexican Female Artist of the Year in 2007; she went on to win the award nine consecutive times.

Music wasn’t all there was to Jenni Rivera. The all-rounder was also active in her community and devoted much of her time to civic causes. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence appointed her its spokesperson in the United States. On 9 December 2012, Rivera died in a plane crash near Monterrey along with six others.

She was married thrice: José Trinidad Marín (1984 — 1992), Juan López (1997 — 2003), Esteban Loaiza (2010 till her death). Jenni was survived by five children.

It took Jenni another five years before she tried her hands on marriage again after her separation from Trino. She married her second husband, Juan López, in 1997. They had a daughter, Jenicka, in 1997 and a son, Juan Angel, in 2001 before they divorced in 2003. In 2007, López was convicted of selling drugs. He died from complications of pneumonia while in prison in 2009.

Rivera was still in high school when the former lovers became parents for the first time. On 26 June 1985, she gave birth to her oldest child, a daughter named Chiquis Rivera. Although Jenni became a mother when she was still in her teens, she could complete high school and cater to her child.

A few years after the birth of Chiquis, on 20 November 1989, Jenni and Marin welcomed their second child, a daughter called Jacqueline. Almost two years later, they became parents again. This time, they had a son, and he was named Michael.

All three children have found success in their various chosen fields of endeavour. Chiquis, the oldest, followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a singer. The other two went on to work as actors, and they have been featured in English and Mexican films and television series.

Upon hearing about the crimes, Jenni immediately filed a complaint against Trino. After lodging a case, he was summoned by the court, but he fled and was marked as a fugitive. He changed his identity and began a life in Riverside County before he was eventually apprehended in April 2006; after nine years on the run.

In 2007, Trino was sentenced to 31 years to life imprisonment without the option of parole.

During a Univision interview, Rosie Rivera, a victim of Trino’s, described the first time she was abused by him as follows:

“Chiquis and I were playing Barbies, and he came in. He asked her to come out, and he asked me if I wanted to play, let’s play love games and brought a quilt. He began to kiss my neck and touch where no one had touched me.”

Trino has requested that his sentence be lowered and that he be freed on bond for good behaviour on two occasions, but his counsel has refused.

Where is Trino Marin now?

Without a doubt, Trino Marin is where he should be. His crime against his own kids, wife and sister-in-law are as grievous as can be. However, redemption seems possible for him still. His daughter, Chiquis, whom he assaulted from age 8 to 12, has forgiven him. She has also pleaded with the public to do the same. 

He is also on speaking terms with his other kids, and when Chiquis got married to Lorenzo Mendez in 2019, Trino called her from prison.

In 2017, Trino met with Jacqie, his younger daughter, who took pictures with him and said that she had forgiven him.

Trino Marin’s life is a real example of actions and consequences. He has and still suffers for his crimes. Fortunately, he has seen forgiveness from both of his daughters and may yet have some peace. Despite unfounded rumours of a possible early release in 2018, he continues to serve his term.
