Premier League: Manchester City and Liverpool defenders injured on unternational duty

Manchester City and Liverpool defenders Nathan Ake and Joe Gomez will play no further part in this month’s international matches after sustaining injuries while on duty with The Netherlands and England respectively.

City’s newly singed defender Ake sustained an injury less than 10 minutes into the Netherlands’ 1-1 draw with former world champions Spain in a friendly game in Amsterdam.

The 25-year-old, who has appeared 6 times since moving to City from Bournemouth, went off with what looked like a hamstring problem in a game that ended 1-1 with goals from Sergio Canales and Donny van de Beek.

On the other hand, Gomez, injured while training, has left the England camp to link up with Liverpool’s medical staff for what the Premier League champions have described as “further diagnosis.” Gomez’s injury means more defensive crisis for Liverpool, who have been without Virgil van Dijk.

The latest development will only increase manager Jurgen Klopp’s growing frustration at the packed fixture schedule.

Both Manchester City and Liverpool managers, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, along with their Manchester United counterpart,Ole Gunnar Solksjær, all called for the Premier League to reintroduce five substitutions in response to players being affected by a heavily congested 2020/21 season.
