Premier League results: Southampton ends Everton’s flying start to the season; PLUS other Sunday results

A more rejuvenated  Southampton side ended Everton‘s superb unbeaten streak to moved up to sixth in the Premier League as the Saints won 2-0 on Super Sunday.

James Ward-Prowse opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a crisp finish after getting a pass from Danny Ings.

Che Adams sealed the victory with his second goal in as many games ten minutes before normal time in the first half.

The Toffees rarely threatened to reach the heights of their season on the afternoon as Lucas Digne saw a straight red card for a challenge on Kyle Walker-Peters compounding Everton’s miserable afternoon.

The Saints, however, extended their unbeaten run to four games while Carlo Ancelotti’s side missed the chance to reclaim top spot outright but they remain ahead of second-placed Liverpool on goal difference.

Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse says: “We knew it was a good challenge for us before the game, for a team to come here unbeaten. We didn’t like that feeling and we wanted to make sure that we could spoil that run.

Confidence is high after the draw at Chelsea and overall it was a professional performance.

“We just had to be ourselves and be aggressive. We believe in what we’re doing and we’re very well organised. As long as we do that, we have the ability to then score goals and we should’ve had a few more today.”

Wolves dominated the second period after the first 45 minutes ended even and goalless, but they finally got the reward for their pressure when Jimenez thundered a strike home in the 80th minute, sending it through the fingertips of Karl Darlow.
