Before Sunday’s El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid‘s women’s teams in the league, a protest was staged by both teams to demand better COVID-19 protocols.
For a few seconds after the initial whistle, both sets of players stood motionless to send a message to the Spanish soccer federation.
The coronavirus pandemic in Spain has resulted in several women’s games being postponed, including five games for league leaders Barcelona.
The players have been calling for more efficient measures to protect the athletes and the competition.
Barcelona were victorious in the El Classico winning the match 4-1, with Asisat Oshoala bagging a brace.
The Catalan club holds a two-point lead over second-place Levante while Real Madrid, in their first season with a women’s team, sits third.
Barcelona also have three games in hand compared to Levante and Real Madrid.
Spain has been one of the countries hit the hardest by the pandemic in Europe.
