7 home remedies that can help you get rid of bad breath

Bad breath is caused by bacteria that grow on the bits of food caught in your teeth and the most common cause of bad breath is poor dental hygiene. This is why dentists recommend brushing twice a day and flossing often to avoid getting plaque on the teeth. It is this plaque that produces a foul smell and consequently leads to tooth decay.

When digested, certain foods like onions and garlic will release sulfur compounds into the bloodstream. When the blood reaches your lungs, it affects your breath. Though some experts are of the opinion that bad breath cases originate in the mouth, the problem may come from elsewhere in the body.

Apart from maintaining a good dental hygiene, we recommend these 7 natural home remedies that can help you get rid of bad breath.

7 Natural home remedies for bad breath

Fruit and Vegetables for Mouth Odour

  1. Apple cider vinegar

To quickly eliminate mouth odour, rinse your mouth with a glass of apple cider vinegar everyday. This natural mouthwash will neutralise odour and freshen your breath.

2. Lemon Juice

The acidity of lemon prompts your mouth to produce more saliva. Just add a few spoonfuls of lemon juice to water and use it as a mouthwash. It has a refreshing taste and will limit foul breath.

3. Pineapple juice

Many people believe that pineapple juice is the quickest and most effective treatment for bad breath. Drink a glass of organic pineapple juice after every meal, or chew on a pineapple slice for one to two minutes. Remember, rinse your mouth of the sugars in fruit and fruit juice afterward.

4. Orange

Oranges promote dental hygiene and are rich in Vitamin C. Research shows that vitamin C helps increase saliva production, which can help eliminate bad breath.

5. Drink Water

One of the major keys to avoiding bad breath is drinking water on a daily basis. The more lubricated your mouth is, the easier it will be to wash away bacteria that causes a bad smell. Sipping on water throughout the day is a great way to maintain your overall health but it also keeps mouth odor at bay.

6. Apples

Certain natural compounds in apples neutralise the foul-smelling compounds in garlic. This is particularly useful for people whose garlic breath lingers, because it neutralises the compounds in the bloodstream, rather than just deodorising the mouth.

7. Baking soda

Baking soda may not be the most pleasant of home remedies for mouth odor, but it is certainly effective. You can create your own mouthwash with baking soda by adding 2 teaspoons of baking soda to 1 cup of warm water. Gargle for at least 30 seconds, twice daily. You should see an improvement within days. Baking powder is known for regulating acidity levels which your mouth needs in order to stay fresh.

Something to note: Some cases of mouth odor are a sign of a more serious condition such as diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney failure, or an infection. If your bad breath is not improving with home treatment, consult your doctor or dentist.
