Heart to Heart: Getting your mind out of Detty December and back to real life

Detty December is long over, and while it may be easy for some people to move on, others have it harder.

It can sometimes be hard to reacclimatize to previous routines after going a long time without adhering to them, like the transition to January from December may have been hard for you.

You may be struggling right now, making small mistakes, tripping over things, and forgetting to do things.

You may find that you’re unwilling to get out of bed in the morning, always snoozing your alarm when it wakes you up for work.

This is a sign that maybe your body and your mind are not aligned about the knowledge that the fun times are not as frequent anymore. And you need to know that you’re not alone.

It’s important to be able to balance your mind and body right after going on a vacation.

So, here are some tips to make your transition from Detty December to January smoother.

1. Ease back into work. You don’t have to jump right back into the stress of work after resuming. If that’s what you’ve been doing, it might be time to take a step back and reconsider.

Make a list of things that you need to do and do things step by step.

Consider it to be like stepping into a hot bath. You need to test the warmness of the water first before you jump into it.

Apply this same philosophy to this situation and you should be well on your way to reacclimatizing.

2. Stop thinking back to ‘fun times’. Don’t think back to fun times that have passed. Instead, comfort yourself with the knowledge that those times will return.

3. Take breaks to relax. It can all get too overwhelming when you’ve just begun, so it’s best to take time off from work when it all gets overwhelming.

Don’t let yourself believe that you have to work yourself into the ground because you took some time off work.

Pace yourself. If you get burnt out, that will do nothing for your productivity.

4. Interact with others, even if you don’t want to. Talking to your co-workers can help speed up the time it takes to get back into the swing of work.

Familiar conversations with familiar people will help your mind get used to the changes from the fun times to the more serious environment.
